Why didn't you fill the remaining space on my roof? It looks like more panels could have fit.

Solar panel placement must follow fire code access and ventilation requirements. These safety pathways limit how close panels can be placed to the roof edges, ridges, and other features, and some jurisdictions require additional setbacks.

Why Your Roof Isn't Fully Covered with Panels

Even if it looks like more panels could fit on your roof, installations must follow strict safety and building code requirements. These rules ensure firefighters have safe access to your roof in an emergency.

  1. Fire Access Pathways Are Required

Codes generally require clear pathways so fire crews can safely reach, ventilate, and work on the roof. Common pathway requirements include:

    • 3 ft. setback on the gable end

    • 18 in. ventilation setback at the ridge

These clear zones cannot be blocked by solar panels.

  2. Your Local Authority (AHJ) May Require More Space

Every jurisdiction can adopt its own version of building and fire codes. Some AHJs require:

    • Larger ridge setbacks

    • Wider access pathways

    • Additional spacing near hips, valleys, or chimneys

Your system was designed to comply with the requirements specific to your address.

  3. Safety and Code Compliance Always Come First

Even if the roof visually appears to have room, panels can only be installed in areas that meet structural, electrical, and safety standards.
